Our History

Our track record in city racing events

City Challenge: the first chapter

With our first racing event in 2007, City Challenge brought the FIA GT 1, GT 2, GT 3 and Formula 3 British Championships to the Romanian capital of Bucharest. All these events – except for the GT 3 class – returned to Bucharest for a second time in 2008. Coverage from more than 400 media representatives shared the City Challenge experience with a global audience and a crowd of 44,000 spectators, including Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, turned out to enjoy thrilling races through the city streets.
Following changes in the Romanian government, the third City Challenge race series was hosted in Budapest in 2009, where the Hungarian capital gave GT 1 and 2 race teams a new city circuit to explore.

Evolving to meet the future of transport

City Challenge CEO Hartmut Beyer has been committed to alternative fuel research since the mid 1980s. Now that electric and hybrid vehicle sales are starting to grow and manufacturers are investing more in greener technologies, it’s the ideal time for City Challenge to lead the way in green city racing events.
